What is fatty liver?

Today the discussion is going to be about fatty liver disease, Also called: Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Alcoholic Steatohepatitis, NAFLD, NASH, Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis. First of all, what is fatty liver ? Fatty liver disease is a condition in which fat builds up in your liver. Fatty liver disease is of 2 types:

  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  • Alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Non-alcoholic Fatty liver is more common in people who have diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol and more. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is due to heavy alcohol use. Your liver breaks down most of the alcohol you drink, so it can be removed from your body. The next stages are alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure if left untreated. Fatty liver disease damages the liver and prevents it from working as well as it should, but lifestyle changes can prevent it from getting worse.But the good thing is this disease can be reversed through a combination of calorie reduction, exercise, and healthy eating.

In general, the diet for fatty liver disease includes:

  • No alcohol.
  • High-fibre plants.
  • Whole grains.
  • Reducing intake of certain foods and beverages including those high in added sugar, salt, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fat.
  • Fruits and vegetables.
  • Fish to reduce inflammation and fat levels.
  • Turmeric to reduce markers of liver damage.
  • Sunflower seeds for antioxidants.

 

Fatty liver disease affects about 25% of people in the world. If you have fatty liver disease or are at risk for developing this condition, certain lifestyle and dietary changes can help improve the health of your liver and reduce the risk of this disease.
